Chicago Community Colleges have become more important in today’s economy than ever before. Many people have lost their jobs in this recession, and it has become clear that many of these jobs are not coming back. To make matters worse, the skills used in a previous job may not be needed anymore. There are no job openings for anything that relates to work done with a person’s existing skill set. This means a career change as well as acquiring new skills.

So many jobs have been lost in our economy to low cost labor in other countries making it important to get skills in an area of employment that is related to services; the type of jobs that will not be sent to another country. This is where Chicago Community Colleges can be so helpful. They lead the way in vocational training and can teach you the knowledge and skills you need for good paying jobs that are here to stay. Although there are private vocational schools that offer specific programs, it is the city colleges in the Chicago area that should be looked at first. Many of these programs have strong reputations and can be taken for a reasonable cost.

Kennedy-King College has a good bank teller program to give a person the skills needed to obtain an entry level position at a bank or credit union. This college also has a construction technology center that teaches carpentry, plumbing, welding, masonry, and even how to lay bricks. There is also a branch of the college called the Washburne Culinary Institute that has a good reputation for turning out graduates who are well prepared to begin a career in the food service industry.

The Richard J. Daley college has an accredited nursing assistant program that will enable a person to begin an exciting and rewarding career in the health care field. The Malcolm X college offers several different programs that will lead to earning an associate degree in applied science. Some examples include that of child development, clinical laboratory technology, emergency medical technology, mortuary science, renal technology, and a two year nursing program.

Chicago Community Colleges will give you the skills that are needed to pursue a career that can be both rewarding and lucrative. These are jobs that exist now, and will exist in the future in Chicago, and all over the nation.

The good news was announced late yesterday that Chicago community colleges will be receiving more financing at city and state levels to expand curriculum and incorporate more programs at the A.A. As well, GED programs will be opening up in Evergreen Park, Schiller Park, Burbank, and Riverdale Community Colleges. The additional funding is geared towards more certifications in the areas of technology, veterinary services, and computer software/programming. Recent years have shown that demand for accessible and affordable continuing education in these areas by individuals and employers has been steadily rising over the last three years in the general Chicago metropolitan area. Research also indicates that 83% of graduates in these areas chose not only to stay in this region, but 3/4 have been able to procure employment in their chosen studies within 6 months.

With the recent upswing in economic growth, city councilors presented a plea for increased funding, which also includes the physical expansion of the above-named community colleges, as well as much-needed updating of classrooms, labs, and additional faculty offices. When approved, the next step was obvious – go to the state senate to present a bill to increase and support additional educational needs for people wanting to take a positive step in their lives with opportunities appearing more frequently for assured future employment.

One of the components in this success story is the Brookfield Zoo, which has more than doubled the successful breeding and birthing of a number of rare and endangered species surpassed only by the San Diego Zoo, the Rio Grande Zoo in Albuquerque, and the Berlin Zoological Gardens. Consequenctly, more and more foreign zoologists have approached Brookfield with proposals of lending or trading rare species to improve the rapidly-shrinking gene pool, as with the cheetah.

As a result of this success story, the zoo has upped its need for technicians in the above-mentioned areas to expand knowledge, care and maintenance, and public support of its breeding programs. In an effort to support the local economy, they strive to draw on Chicago’s community colleges – a success story on all levels!

The Kennedy-King College of Chicago is one of seven chicago community colleges that make up the city colleges of Chicago. The 6,500 member student body has a choice of many technical programs to choose from as well as courses that will prepare them for admission into four year colleges.

Our economy will support skills and trades in the future more so than many of the professions acquired by a four-year degree. All seven of the Chicago city colleges offer programs that will equip students for a job upon receiving their Associates Degree or their Certificate of Completion.

The Kennedy King College has a variety of programs that meet the demands of manufacturing and construction. Training in the medical sciences is also a big part of the curriculum and an RN certificate is obtainable as well as an RN to MSN degree. The health care field will be one of the fastest growing fields in the U.S. job market through 2018 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Kennedy King campus is composed of mostly new buildings which makes the setting all the more conducive to learning. One of the finest libraries is located on the campus with online service to almost any location in the U.S.Forty-three percent of the enrolled students are working toward a four-year degree. However, many of the remaining students are learning job skills that will enhance their life.

Kennedy King College has a high percentage of students who working diligently to obtain a future that includes legal economic success. All of the seven Chicago community colleges take their curriculum development responsibilities seriously, but Kennedy King seems to have found the right balance between what skills the community needs and what skills can be learned at Kennedy King. The academic achievement statistics are lower at Kennedy King than three other colleges, but their overall course completion rate is high.

There are three affiliated satellite campuses that broaden the scholastic opportunities for students and they are:

•Washburne Culinary Institute (WCI)

•The French Pastry School (FSP)

•Dawson Technical Institute (DTI)The tuition is $89 for “in-district” students and $173 for “out-of-district” students which makes chicago community colleges one of the most inexpensive colleges to attend.

Chicagoland students find an impressive array of community colleges in Chicago competing to serve their needs. There are literally dozens of schools, and many of these schools maintain multiple locations. They have geographic locations designed for convenience, and class schedules designed around the needs of young people and working people.

Like community colleges nationwide, these organizations exist to provide two-year associates degrees, and affordable academic coursework meant to be transferable to four-year colleges.

More than that, though, community colleges also focus on job training, practical skills, and vocational training. Chicago-area schools seem to have an especially tight focus on job training and coordination with local employers. Given the city’s business-minded reputation and appetite for work, this may not be too surprising. Community college options exist in every section of Chicagoland, with a variety of non-profit and for-profit schools.

Standing at the core of all metropolitan community colleges in Chicago stands the city-run City Colleges of Chicago, founded in 1911, with the historic foundation of Crane Technical College. Like the city it serves, the CCC system is vast, complex, diverse, and concentrated on business opportunities. The stated CCC mission is to “deliver exceptional learning opportunities and educational services for diverse student populations in Chicago”.

It runs seven separate colleges and, as of early 2012, combined enrollment in those seven colleges of the CCC system is just under 63,000 students. It offers more than 200 academic programs altogether, with a tight focus on job training, and longstanding college-employer partnerships.

Within the system, the downtown City Colleges school is Harold Washington College, at State and Wabash in the Loop. It runs the only site in the city of Chicago for taxi driver certification), and it also runs the Workforce Institute, which coordinates and delivers on-the-job-training services to local businesses and the community.

The other sites (moving from south to north) include Olive-Harvey College, which serves the Pullman Community (the far south side) and operates a second campus in the Ainsworth neighborhood of the near south side.

Richard J. Daley College is on Pulaski, a little bit south of Midway Airport, and has as a sister school the Arturo Velasquez Institute, a technical training facility.

Kennedy-King College in Englewood runs its own campus along with the Dawson Technical Institute and the Washburn Culinary Institute, which operates two public restaurants on student labor.

Malcolm X College serves the Near West Side, with its campus on the Eisenhower Expressway at the site of the oldest such institution in the city, the 1911 Crane Technical School mentioned above. Malcolm X concentrates on the healthcare industry and offers the largest selection of college-level healthcare degree programs and certification programs in the entire county.

Rounding out the seven community colleges in Chicago, are Wilbur Wright College, northwest of the city on Montrose and Narragansett, and Harry S Truman College, formerly Mayfair College, in Uptown a few blocks away from the lake.

On January 20, 2012, Mayor Raum Emanuel delivered a speech to the U.S. Conferences of Mayors which outlines his vision for the future of a modernized City Colleges system. The emphasis is to be on even more targeted coordination with business, specifically the healthcare industry (with programs centered at Malcoln X College) and the transportation and logistics industry (with programs centered at Olive-Harvey College).

National businesses like Walgreens and UPS have even been invited in to help develop curricula. In the speech Emanuel urged other mayors to take similar action, describing the community colleges in Chicago as an economic engine that can “catapult millions of people into employment and into the middle class.”
